Longreach Walking Network Plan 2024

Longreach Walking Network Plan 2024

Longreach Regional Council

Purpose

The Longreach Walking Network Plan (WNP) was developed to improve walkability across Longreach by creating safer, more accessible and convenient pathways. Funded by the Department of Transport and Main Roads under the Walking Local Government Grants, the project aligned with the Queensland Walking Strategy 2019–2029, which encouraged walking as a primary mode of transport and recreation for all residents.

The plan aimed to establish a connected and easy-to-navigate walking network, ensuring that pathways were comfortable, safe and pleasant for all users, including those with mobility challenges. By enhancing access and connectivity between key destinations, the WNP promoted a healthier, more vibrant community while supporting local tourism and environmental sustainability.

Approach

CPR Group used a structured methodology guided by the Walkability Improvement Tool (WIT) to ensure alignment with local and state guidelines. The approach involved:

  • Conducting community workshops, online surveys and consultations with local representatives

  • Mapping existing and potential walking routes through site audits

  • Developing preliminary walking maps to gather community feedback

  • Identifying key destinations and people movement data to ensure a connected walking network

Outcomes

The Longreach WNP provided a clear framework for improving the town’s walkability. It identified key infrastructure upgrades and presented a prioritised works program that will help Longreach Regional Council secure further funding. By fostering pedestrian-friendly environments, the WNP enhanced social connectivity, promoting healthier lifestyles and strengthening Longreach’s identity as an inclusive, accessible community. The plan lays the groundwork for future improvements to ensure Longreach’s walking network continues to support its community.
