University Club Governance Training
CPR Group has worked extensively with university guilds across Australia, from constitution reviews to election support. One of our recent projects was the development of club governance training for Tertiary Access Group (TAG). TAG provides services that include a vast and varied range of student support to university guilds with the aim to create a community on campus so that the student experience is as rewarding as possible. TAG members are spread across more than 150 campuses – the majority of universities in Australia and several in New Zealand, along with a number of TAFEs.
University clubs and societies can be the heart of campus life. They create a foundation for lifelong friendships, personal and professional development, and they enhance the university experience for members. There are clubs and societies for just about everything; academics, sport, culture, religion, politics, the arts, community service, hobbies and special interests.
However, just like for the sporting clubs and non-profit groups we have been working with for over two decades, there are challenges in running a great club. Our training is designed to be accessible for university students, with short videos and relevant resources that are easy to implement. The balance of governance theory and practical applications are developed to deliver long-lasting changes for clubs so they can better serve their members – in this case, the students. Interestingly, there is a common theme in the popular content in our governance training materials across both university clubs and sporting clubs. In both, the most accessed material is regarding meeting basics.

As we have been providing support to club volunteers at universities for several years now, it is so rewarding when university students who have taken part in our training programs contact us to let us know how our training has supported them in their transition into community clubs outside of university. Inspired by their university club experiences and supported by our TAG Governance Training, we look forward to watching thousands more students continue their volunteering in sports and non-profit groups, armed with the knowledge to run a great club. We’re secretly hoping of starting an uprising of good club governance!
