Port Douglas Sports Complex and Coronation Park (Mossman Showgrounds) Master Plan
Douglas Shire Council commissioned CPR Group to prepare master plans for Coronation Park (Mossman Showgrounds) and the Port Douglas Sports Complex. The scope of works included stakeholder and community consultation, reporting and master plan design for the two sites.
The purpose of the master plans was to create highly desirable, regional sports-focused precincts, to compliment the area’s natural beauty and to create pride of place - a high-end design for national and international sports tourism opportunities.
The designs needed to provide improved facilities to the community, and growing clubs, increasing participation and health benefits through quality venues and training grounds and to stimulate sports club member growth. Facilities needed to be equitable and cater to a wide range of users including youth, females and people of all abilities. They needed to be flexible to accommodate regional events, including the annual show, entertainment and artistic events.
CPR Group worked with Council, users and the broader community to identify needs and future ideas for the two sites.
The ideas formulated through the process were included in draft Master Plans which were published for the Council, stakeholders and broader community to provide input.
This input was summarised and the master plans were refined and finalised.
The results were long term master plans, including prioritised implementation plans, outlining scopes of work for each site. The plan not only addressed physical improvements and additions to the sites to maximise efficiencies, space and multi-sport use, but also addressed operational recommendations to ensure that the fundamental functions of both sites are addressed.
Through this project, CPR Group was able to identify real needs in the communities and bring Council and stakeholders together.
The documents provide prioritised guidance for future maintenance, capital, and operational changes and upgrades. The high quality of these documents provides an excellent case for external funding opportunities to turn the community's dreams into reality sooner.
CPR Group have been outstanding in delivering the sports masterplan to the Douglas Shire Council. They have not only been able to deliver an exceptional masterplan for the Port Douglas Sports Complex but have been able to deal with conflicting requests from stakeholders. The passion that they have for delivering something that is ‘right for the community’ is evident and have shown constant professionalism throughout.
