Activating Sporting Clubs as Community Venues: A Win-Win Opportunity for All
Sunshine Coast Community Venues Audit Report
Background
Located in the Sunshine State, Queensland, the growing Sunshine Coast region boasts a diverse range of community venues that play a crucial role in providing spaces for various activities, programs, services and events within our community. With over 474 venues in the region and managed by multiple providers, such as community organisations, schools, churches and Council, this project offered an exciting opportunity to consolidate and analyse a diverse data source to support local government venue management.
Sunshine Coast Council undertook a regional community venues audit to gather in-depth knowledge of the venues in the region. Council then engaged CPR Group to collate, visualise, analyse and report on the key findings. CPR Group’s role was to convert the raw data into invaluable insights that will aid Council in optimising the utilisation of the community venues in the region.
Journey
CPR Group recognised this project as an opportunity to not only provide a report but to also develop an interactive dashboard that would provide Council with a tool to make informed decisions to enhance the community venues network and the community's overall well-being past the life of the project and into the future.
From the very beginning, with this goal in mind, a data-driven approach was implemented to ensure the project's success in providing an accurate assessment of Council's community venue provision, future facility needs and recommendations. The project involved a systematic process that included data collection, data modelling and analysis, development of an interactive report and delivery of a final report.
CPR Group's team utilised their expertise in data analysis and visualisation to develop the interactive dashboard. The dashboard drove the analysis, allowed Council to explore and understand the data more effectively and provided a tool for future decision-making.
Along with the interactive dashboard, a report was also prepared, which delivered background information, observations and recommendations based on the audit results, population projections, demographic data, regional planning strategies and industry standards. The report provided a detailed analysis of the data collected and presented the findings in a manner that provides a foundational context for the provision and consideration of community spaces within the Sunshine Coast.
Use of Technology
The audit's results, along with population projections, demographic data and internal Council data sources, were modelled and visualised using Microsoft Power BI. The dashboard utilised tables, charts and maps with the ability to filter and drill down into the data to compare venue information across the region.
The Power BI dashboard is a valuable planning tool that Council will continue to use beyond the conclusion of the project. CPR Group conducted training workshops to the relevant officers across the departments to provide everyone with the knowledge and confidence to utilise the data and visualisations for future planning.
Next Steps
Overall, the completion of the community venues audit report by CPR Group on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council is a significant milestone towards understanding and enhancing the community venues network in the region. The data collected, analysed and reported on by CPR Group consultants provides a comprehensive view of the network and its capabilities. This information will undoubtedly assist Council in better serving the community by maximising the use of the community venues and identifying areas for improvement.
CPR Group is proud to not only provide Council with a report identifying trends, gaps and opportunities in the network of local community venues but to also provide an interactive dashboard. The dashboard provides Council with the tools to make informed decisions with a long-term view of the future.
