Youth Leadership Groups

Many sports clubs have a significant number of teenagers among their membership. Far fewer clubs are recognising these emerging adults as a separate and significant stakeholder group.

Involving teenagers in the running of the club, both on and off the field of play, can provide great benefits to both the club and their teenage members. Establishing a Youth Leadership Group, or similar, enables a club to understand what this age group values, what they enjoy and what changes that may like to enhance their club community.

We recently worked with a club in developing a strategic plan for them, and as part of the project we undertook a strategic planning workshop with a group of their teenage members. The perspective that they provided, and the ideas that they generated, were quite different to the opinions of the management committee members and the final strategic plan was more rounded and much enhanced as a consequence of their involvement.

In addition to occasional activities such as strategic planning there are many more regular club activities that teenagers can be involved in. Running game day operations, officiating, mentoring younger athletes or providing a youth voice in decision making processes are all areas where an engaged teenager group can provide additional manpower to the club.

In return, the teenagers themselves gain from these opportunities. By participating in these leadership roles, young people gain confidence, learn teamwork, improve communication, and develop a sense of responsibility and belonging. The benefits extend beyond personal development. Sporting clubs who actively engage with their teenage members are likely to see higher levels of engagement and retention among young members. These programs create a sense of ownership and pride, encouraging young athletes to stay involved in sport both on and off the field. They also foster inclusive environments where youth perspectives are valued and respected, helping clubs evolve and remain relevant to their changing communities.

So engage with your teenagers, recognise them as an asset to your club community, and help shape tomorrow’s leaders!
